ELLIS   FAMILY

John ELLIS arrived in Tasmania on the convict ship Lady Harewood in July 1829.  He had been sentenced to death at Stafford in 1828 on a charge of Housebreaking but the sentence was commuted to transportation for life.

Maria (or Mary) PUGH was tried at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) in London and was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing.  She arrived in Hobart in June 1828 on board the convict ship Mermaid.

John ELLIS and Maria PUGH were married in Tasmania on 4 June 1832.  Their children were:

  Thomas ELLIS (1835-1905).

        Married Hannah HILL in 1857 in Bendigo.

 

  Sarah Ann ELLIS (1836-1836)

 

  Elizabeth ELLIS (1837-1916)

        Married Thomas HUTCHENS/HITCHENS.

  Sarah ELLIS (1840-1895)

        Married Sheaka GULLAMHASSAN in Victoria in 1859

 

John ELLIS died near Swansea in May 1848.

Maria (Pugh) ELLIS married George BURT in 1849 and Robert HALLIDAY in 1861.  Maria died at Swansea in May 1867.
