GOLDSMITH FAMILY
John
GOLDSMITH was sentenced to transportation for life when he appeared in a Surrey
court in December 1826. He had been
found guilty of burglary in December 1826. He was single and aged about 19 years. He was transported to Van Diemen’s Land on the “Layton”, leaving
Portsmouth on 17 June 1827 and arriving in Hobart on 9 October 1827.
Mary Ann
DONOVAN was tried at the Central Criminal Court in London on 29 May 1828 and
was sentenced to 14 years transportation for larceny. Her convict record states that her proper
name was MAHER and her father was Jeremiah Maher, a gardener. Mary Ann had been born in County Kerry,
Ireland. She left England in September
1828 on the “Harmony”, arriving in Van Diemen’s Land on 14 January 1829. Mary Ann’s convict record is contained in the
book, “Notorious Strumpets and Dangerous Girls” by Phillip Tardif.
John
Goldsmith and Mary Ann Donovan were married at New Norfolk on 14 November
1836. Children born to them were:

GOLDSMITH’s second wife was Lavinia Ann CHERRY (nee HILL) whom he married in Hobart in December 1873.
They had
one son:
